Chanel returns to the Grand Palais for SS25

Chanel returns to the Grand Palais for SS25

Presented at the iconic Grand Palais in Paris, Chanel showcased its SS25 Ready-to-Wear collection, marking the first season since former Creative Director Virginie Viard left the esteemed fashion house.

Without a director at the helm, the brand chose to focus on its rich history. The centerpiece of the runway was a massive birdcage, symbolizing a gift once received by Gabrielle Chanel, with house ambassador Riley Keough performing her cover of “When Doves Cry” out of the structure.

The collection featured all the signature elements of Chanel, as the studio team drew on the iconic styles that shaped the brand’s century-old legacy. Tweeds were, of course, front and center, modernized into short sets the classic skirt suits. Soft hued and playful pastels kept things fresh, along with knee-length skirts featuring daring slits that flashed bare legs as models made their way down the catwalk.

Newer elements also made their way onto the runway, with feathers featured prominently, attached to skirts, jackets, and charming Peter Pan collars. Chiffon capes, crochet, and lace added dimension to an otherwise classic Chanel collection.

Despite the absence of a current creative director, the show succeeded in delivering the drama associated with Chanel runways of the past. The enormous set seemed to nod not only to Gabrielle but also to the larger-than-life performances that Karl Lagerfeld crafted during his tenure at the fashion house. The collection felt safe in its commercial viability and will no doubt be celebrated by longtime fans and collectors of the brand. Additionally, it serves as an excellent palate cleanser, ready to usher in whoever will take Viard’s former role.

In this time of uncertainty regarding future leadership, Chanel’s incredible history will continue to inform its future, bolstered by a talented in-house team to ensure its ongoing success.
