An Interview with Jemma Moore

An Interview with Jemma Moore

We had the pleasure of talking to the incredibly talented Jemma Moore following the release of her new series, "Red Eye.” On ITV1.

Known for her captivating performance in the hit horror film "Host" and Netflix’s "Lockwood & Co," Jemma is a multifaceted talent and celebrated breakthrough star. We were lucky enough to be joined by Jemma in the studio to chat about the thrilling new show, how she gets into the character of reporter Jess Li, and the symbiotic relationship between fashion and storytelling.

Hi Jemma! Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions with us today! Would you first like to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey! I am Jemma, I’m a mixed British/Chinese, neurodiverse actor.

You recently played Jess Li in the ITV1 series Red Eye which is a riveting political thriller set between Beijing and London. What was it about your character that resonated with you?

So, I found Jess to be such an intriguing character. She’s constantly juggling so many things and facing all kinds of obstacles. Acting and journalism have so much in common, and I loved making those connections. But what really struck a chord with me was her fierce passion for her work and her relentless quest for the truth.

How did you prepare for the role of Jess Li? Were there any specific challenges you faced during this process?

I spent a lot of time diving into the world of female journalists. I watched and read interviews with and by inspiring figures like Marie Colvin and Alex Crawford. As an actor, I often work with my acting coach Miriam Lucia for guidance throughout the audition and filming process. Together, we worked to develop Jess into a well rounded character.

One particular challenge I faced was portraying all the phone calls Jess had to make, without having the other actors there to feed off their emotions and shifts in tone. Thankfully, our amazing script supervisor and 1st AD stepped in to read lines for the other actors, and I spent a lot of time in my prep building the other side of the conversation.

You worked alongside the super talented Jing Lusi who played your half-sister in the series, what was it like to work alongside Jing and such a talented crew?

I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to collaborate with such a talented and dedicated cast and crew. I got to witness how these seasoned and skilled actors carry themselves on set and channel their craft. It was a real learning experience for me.

You work with some intense storylines, this latest series sees your character thrown into the midst of a murder conspiracy, you have also worked on the critically acclaimed horror film Host. How do you rewind after shoot days where the scripts and plot contents are so emotionally heightened?

I love watching reality TV as a way to unwind. It’s such a change of pace from what I do during the day that I can just completely switch off. I also make sure to take care of myself physically by exercising. And when I need to refocus, I go to therapy - it’s been such a helpful tool for me. Sometimes, if I don’t have to work the next day, I’ll indulge in a sexy bottle of natural wine either on a date night or with some pals. And let’s not forget about karaoke - belting out Avril Lavigne’s ‘I’m with you’ with friends is also basically therapy… no?

How important is costume design in helping you get into character?

To me, costume is crucial. It’s like a second skin, one you have control over. Your character decides how they want to be seen by the world, whether it’s a choice or not. For some, their outfit is like armour, protecting and defining them. And for others, it’s a way to hide from the outside world. Others are given a costume to restrict or control them. The power of costume is that it conveys a person’s character before they even say a word or make a move. For me, stepping into character wouldn’t be complete without the right costume.

Are there any specific scenes or moments in the show that you’re particularly excited for viewers to see?

I absolutely adore the moments in the Li family home. It’s such a refreshing change to see a mixed family dynamic portrayed on screen. Amongst all the chaos, there’s so much heart in those scenes. I also loved filming my scenes with Peter Guinness, who plays Sir George Chapman. Despite the short amount of time we had, we managed to pack so much into our scenes. Those intense and almost horror-like moments of running around the house were so much fun to film.

Has your own fashion sense ever been influenced by a character you have played?

Oooooo great question! Honestly, I don’t think so. However, I have to say that I learn an incredible amount from the hair, makeup, and costume departments on every set I’m on. It’s amazing to work with such talented experts who have a wealth of knowledge in their field. If you take the time to sit and really listen, you’ll come away with so many great tips and tricks.

How would you describe your own fashion sense in three words?

Casual, edgy, sporty.

What is a quintessential Jemma Moore outfit? What clothing items make you feel most like yourself?

Hmmm… probably a mixed combo of Adidas trainers or a chunky boot from Miista, baggy jeans or a mini skirt and then a baggy t-shirt or a tight racer top. Then depending on the very unpredictable UK weather, an oversized hoodie with a big bomber jacket or a leather blazer.

What is next for you in your career? What can our readers look forward to seeing you in next?

I recently finished filming a sci-fi called Moonquake and I am writing my first feature film. This industry is so unpredictable and exciting… so who knows what’s around the corner.
