Peter Do joins Helmut Lang as Creative Director

Yesterday it was announced that Peter Do will be joining fashion house Helmut Lang as Creative Director as of May 15th, the first collection under his name debuting in September for Helmut Lang’s Spring/Summer collection in 2024.

Peter Do was born in Biên Hòa, Vietnam, before immigrating to Philadelphia age 14. In New York he studied Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology and was the recipient of the inaugural 2014 LMVH Graduate Prize. Following this, Do went on to work in the Ready-to-Wear atelier of Phoebe Philo’s Céline, before returning to New York to work at Derek Lam. Do launched his eponymous label in 2018, which gained cult like status for those in the know. His sharp silhouettes  and edgy tailoring has grown the brand to become one of the most exciting emerging brands of recent years.

Fans of the effortlessly cool brand will no doubt be pleased to know that Do will remain at the helm of Peter Do, juggling his time between the two fashion houses.

The pairing feels entirely natural, Peter Do has cited Helmut Lang as a great influence to him, alongside Martin Margiela. “No one embodied radical thinking more definitively than Helmut Lang. It is my deep honour to be entrusted with ushering in the next chapter of Helmut Lang’s legacy. I am excited to learn from the foundations this house stands on and to continue creating new, energetic clothes that inspire people to challenge their understanding of what is possible when it comes to expressing their individuality.” Reads Peter Do’s statement that was shared to both his own and Helmut Lang’s instagram accounts to launch the news.

For Helmut Lang ‘new and energetic clothes’ are precisely what the fashion house needs. The brand has seemingly fallen from the forefront of fashion, Peter Do’s appointment as the new Creative Director of the Austrian brand could see a new lease of life for the fashion house, and a return to the edgier and more artistic leanings that saw it’s explosive success of it’s earlier years.

With fashion fans delighted at the news, we can’t wait to see this pairing’s debut in September.
