Fashion in Film - Everything Everywhere All At Once

Fashion in Film - Everything Everywhere All At Once

Since its release in May 2022, Everything Everywhere All At Once has been on the tip of everybody’s tongue. The surreal and comedic action movie, set in an ever expanding multiverse, explores themes of family, generational trauma, nihilism and the desire to feel accepted by those you love.

With a staggering 7 Oscar wins, 7 academy awards, alongside countless other nominations and wins across different categories, the film has made history as the most awarded film of all time. Michelle Yeoh being only the second women of colour to receive an Oscar in the ‘Best Actress’ category; the first since Halle Berry in 2002. Ke Huy Quan has quickly become a firm fan favourite, as people around the world cheer on his comeback story from child actor to Oscar winner. So immersive is the world created by the entire team, its success comes as no surprise to anyone who has had the pleasure of watching it.

Arguably, the incredible costumes, orchestrated by Shirley Kurata, have left a memory just as important as the performances given by the talented cast. Keeping the audience on the edge of their seats with whimsical and always unexpected costume choices, the fashion transports the audience into the increasingly bizarre worlds the characters find themselves in. We round up our favourite outfits from both on and off the screen.

Spoilers Ahead!

An easy favourite of ours! This Elvis inspired outfit, reportedly reworked from an Elvis impersonator’s wardrobe, is an incredible introduction to the wild and unpredictable character of Jobu Tupaki. A stark contrast to Joy’s discreet style choices of oversized flannels and hoodies, this larger than life outfit perfectly demonstrates the polarity of the two versions of Stephanie Hsu’s character.

As we explore the many lives Evelyn Wang could have lived if she had followed different timelines, the Ellie Saab gown she wears in her life of fame and fortune makes a particular impact. In striking opposition to her usual laundromat garb, the enormity of her tulle gown highlights the life of decadence and riches that have been forsaken for a quiet life with Wayland.

Another winner from Jobu Tupaki’s costumes, this pearl and crystal beaded dress complete with Elizabethan ruff appears to be the most subdued in terms of colour but is brimming with intricate details. The work of Michelle Chung (makeup department head) and Anissa E. Salazar (hair department head) really shine through in this look. Jobu’s makeup is adorned with pearls giving her an angelic almost heavenly look as we reach the emotional climax of the film. Jobu’s hair is fashioned into a braided bagel, a foreshadowing of her plans to be revealed within the scene.

Making an impact both on and off the screen, Stephanie Hsu stunned at the SAG Awards wearing Carolina Herrara gown and Cartier jewellery.

Another award show favourite, Michelle Yeoh in her Dior gown in which she collected her historic Oscar’s win. The look was accessorised with a Richard Mille watch and Moussaieff Jewellers diamonds, creating a timeless look we’ll remember for years.
